Why do teeth discoloured?

While the difference might only be obvious to a dentist or a dental hygienist, tooth-related stains can broadly be grouped into three categories.

Extrinsic Teeth Stains

These are the stains where the cause and effect is most obvious as they are on the outer surface of the teeth – the enamel.  Extrinsic stains are mostly caused by the pigmentation in what we consume and so staining on the tooth enamel gradually worsens over time.
Common culprits include tobacco, wine, carbonated soft drinks and energy drinks, and (annoyingly as you’re reading this whilst sipping a Latte) tea and coffee.
Extrinsic staining is difficult to avoid as so much in our diet is a potential cause; luckily these are also the stains that are simplest to remedy.

Intrinsic Teeth Stains

Intrinsic staining of teeth affects the inner layer of the teeth – the dentine.  The dentine may darken or become yellow and the discoloration can be particularly noticeable if the outer layer (enamel) has been worn away too.
Staining on the inside of the tooth is usually affected by health related aspects such as:
·         Too much fluoride consumption when very young
·         Certain medications such as tetracycline antibiotics (particularly under the age of 8)
·         Trauma to the tooth causing nerve damage
·         Tooth decay (usually present where the tooth meets the gumline)
·         Genetics
Unsurprisingly these are harder to remedy, but far from impossible. An extrinsic stain simply needs removing from the surface, the intrinsic has worked into the tooth and so a different approach is required.

Age-related Discolouration

Over time, if there are cracks or fractures in your enamel, staining on the outside of the tooth can penetrate deeper and affect the inner layer.
Even without damage to the enamel of teeth, as we age the dentine naturally yellows and the enamel layer thins, this allows the darkened dentine to show through.

Something a little different: Old Dentistry

As enamel wears away, metal fillings may give teeth a noticeably “grey” appearance and old veneers and composite bonding can darken with time (and can appear even darker if you whiten your natural teeth).

How can I change the colour of my teeth?

Trying to assess what type of discolouration you have requires a dental professional assessment.  A clear assessment of the cause of discoloration will allow targeted treatment and the best result will be achieved.
Guessing can lead to the wrong treatment. It might be tempting to buy whitening toothpaste but this will have no impact on intrinsic staining. It will also have very little impact on surface staining as the dosage of active whitening ingredients legally allowed to be purchased over the counter are too low to have any impact.
Worse still, others turn to home whitening kits and gels that are not prescribed by a dental professional. At best, these will have no impact, at worst they will be wholly unsuitable to the type of staining you have.
The kits are often ill-fitting and the gel at a dosage that is either too weak or (illegally) too strong. Rather than whitening teeth, a far more likely result is to cause burns to the gums and create problems that require medical attention.

First things first
Seeing a dentist will help you identify the cause of your stained or discoloured teeth and they will provide you with the best treatment options for whitening your teeth.
For extrinsic staining caused by food, drink and smoking it is always advised to have an appointment with one of our hygienists who can get your smile back to it is former shining glory.
Following a thorough clean by a dental hygienist, extrinsic staining can be further treated with professional teeth whitening (provided all the teeth being whitened are natural teeth and there are no other reasons for your discoloured teeth).
Intrinsic staining will require a different approach, where the bleaching agent is either placed inside the tooth or other cosmetic options are considered (such as porcelain or composite veneers).
it’s essential to visit a dentist for an oral examination to discuss your suitability for treatment.
Proper oral care at home underscores any professional treatment that you may get, as this not only helps you to maintain your beautiful smile once it has been restored, but also helps to look after your oral and overall health.

Dental Tourism In India

The latest trends worldwide suggest an increase in the number of oral diseases among people due to negligence, genetic and regional reasons. However, awareness related to dental treatments and oral hygiene has also increased, especially in the last couple of decades. Although dental procedures are the most effective and reliable way to deal with dental problems, there are a few constraints that hold individuals back.

In most Western countries, dental care is expensive and not as economical compared to countries, including India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. Thus, the concept of dental tourism emerged where people visit the mentioned countries seeking dental care as well as an opportunity to explore a new country. The cost of accommodation, flights, and dental care in these countries is much cheaper compared to getting dental care in their own country.

The business of dental tourism is vastly growing and increasing like a booming market in India. The interest of the market is to gain the attention of foreigners and most importantly it is a new kind of market which has the ability to attract foreigners and explain our treatment plan with advance technology.

India has become one of the most popular hubs for dental tourism as places such as Goa, Kerala, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and many more offer an array of beautiful sights and affordable dental care.

The dental tourism in India has grown in stature, especially in the last couple of decades. Several factors have contributed to the growth of dental tourism in India that includes:-

·         High-quality and affordable dental care – India is a country without a shortage of highly qualified, skilled, and experienced dental experts who offer a range of dental services under the same roof. Further, the cost of treatment is 1/10th of the cost foreigners pay in their country. Thus, India has rightly emerged as a popular hub for dental tourism.

·         Easy communication – In India, most dentists speak and understand English, which makes communication very easy.

  • Waiting time – Due to the growing number of dental clinics and professionals throughout the country, there is no problem with getting an appointment for the desired period of your travel.

·         Enhanced sterilization – At present, the protocol for dental sterilization is at par with international standards, which ensures that the dental clinic is clean and free from bacteria and microbes.

  • Medication cost is less – The cost of medication in India is comparatively less due to the established pharmacy sector in the country saving import duty. Further, the cost of research and development required is also inexpensive in India, making it one of the most affordable destinations for healthcare worldwide.

·          Tourism – India is the 7th largest country by size in the world. Thus, it has a lot to offer for tourists. A mixture of sea, mountains, desert, snow-capped mountains, beaches, low-lying plains, etc., India has it all.

Alternatives Of Toothbrush In The Modern World

Most people use toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss to clean their teeth, but their use is by no means universal. Many indigenous groups, as well as people in developing countries, use traditional techniques to clean their teeth. Some of these techniques are more effective than others.
Many people in the Middle East, and some parts of South and Southeast Asia, use twigs from the arak tree (known as miswak) to clean their teeth. They fray the end of the twig, dampen the resulting bristles with water or rosewater and then rub the bristles against their teeth (see video below). The wood of the arak tree (Salvadora persica) has a high concentration of fluoride and other antimicrobial components that prevent tooth decay.
Twigs from other trees, especially aromatic trees that freshen the mouth, are used in different cultures. These so-called chew sticks have been in use for thousands of years. The first recorded use was in ancient Babylonia but they were also used in China as far back as 1600BC.
Using twigs can have similar cleaning effects as a conventional toothbrush, as shown in several studies. But the sticks can’t reach areas between the teeth, and if they aren’t used properly, they can damage the gums and abrade the teeth.
Fingers
In some cultures, people rub various substances onto their teeth with their fingers. For example, in some Muslim countries, people rub walnut tree bark on their teeth. The bark of this tree has a antimicrobial properties and is also believed to have a whitening effect. However, no studies have been conducted to investigate its effectiveness or side effects.
Some people in rural India, Africa, Southeast Asia and South America use brick, mud, salt ,powder or ash to clean their teeth. Although these ingredients effectively remove stains and plaque, they don’t contain fluoride and are often abrasive, resulting in sensitive teeth and receding gums.
Charcoal which is also a traditional tooth cleaning powder, is making a bit of a comeback. Some modern toothpastes and toothbrushes now contain this ingredient, and evidence suggests that it can bind to harmful bacteria and inactivate them.
But not all natural products can be recommended . betel quid and areca nuts ,which are often used in Southeast Asia for tooth cleaning – stain the teeth and gums. And worse than that, they are associated with an increased risk of oral cancer.
Another tooth cleaning method that doesn’t involve toothpaste or a toothbrush is oil pulling – an ancient Ayurveda practice. Here, a small amount of coconut, sesame, sunflower or olive oil is swirled around the mouth for 15 minutes. This is believed to wash out bacteria and toxins. Oil pulling, when performed along with routine brushing and flossing, can help to reduce gum inflammation , according to recent studies.
Modern methods
Tooth decay (caries) and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) are among the most common diseases, with most of the world population affected, according to the   world health organization With few exceptions, these diseases are preventable with ideal oral hygiene and a healthy diet. The high percentage of people suffering from these diseases suggests that most people oral hygience methods are not up to the ideal standard and need to be improve.
Modern oral hygiene devices are specifically designed to clean even difficult to reach areas in the mouth and are highly effective, but only when done correctly. However, some alternative cleaning techniques, such as oil pulling, are useful additions.

The Best Age for Braces

Every parent or guardian has this obvious question and most of them don’t have the proper knowledge on it and Believe it or not, the need for braces extends beyond the obvious crooked teeth. It is not always evident to a parent that their child needs braces, which is why an orthodontic evaluation is an important part of kids’ dental care. Around age 7, a child should be evaluated for teeth crowding, misalignments, spaces or missing teeth, and bite.

All of these factors help to determine whether or not a child would benefit from braces or other oral devices to help support good oral care, address speech, pain, or chewing concerns, and/or abnormal wear of the teeth.  The evaluation will help you to determine the best age for braces for your child’s specific situation.

While orthodontic concerns can be addressed at nearly any point (child, teen, adult), ideally braces should be placed while the child’s head and mouth are still growing, making those middle school years (11-14) the best age for braces.  It’s not just their age that matters, it’s also  important that your child is responsible enough to maintain a healthy oral habits routine including brushing twice daily, and using mouthwash and flossing once a day.
They also need to be able to understand what foods to avoid to prevent damage to their braces, and to be able to communicate about any pain they are experiencing.

Time duration for orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatment time will vary by patient based on the severity of the misalignment. During an orthodontic consultation, the orthodontist will provide a time range of when braces can be expected to achieve the desired results. It’s important to know that timelines can change however based on how receptive the teeth are to movement, and care of the teeth and braces.
All that said, most patients can expect to wear braces for at least 12 months, with the average being between 18-30 months. Some patients will continue to wear a retainer following orthodontic braces, for additional time as suggested by the orthodontist.
So, all of you with middle schoolers – now is the best age for braces! With the summer months and winter ahead of us, it’s the perfect time for that orthodontic consultation and it’s perfect for kids before they head back to school!
A healthy mouth includes a proper bite and aligned teeth, making an orthodontist an important part of your oral health care team. To begin creating that beautiful, healthy smile consult your nearby/known orthodontist or orthodontist in your area online to make an appointment today!

Benefits and importance of regular dental visits

Regular dental visits for a check-up and professional cleaning plays an important role in oral healthcare and overall well being.

Long back most of the dentist emphasis of fixing of dental problems but this scenario is changed. Nowadays dentistry is all about preventive dental care including regular examination and cleaning.

It may be tempting to neglect dental visits because of a hectic lifestyle but ensuring your teeth and gums are kept in good condition will avoid far more expensive procedure further down the line-good reason to show off your beaming smile.

The American dental association recommends dental visits every six months or as otherwise determined by your dentist.

Here are some most important reasons why dental visits are important:-

1.Early detection of dental problems.
During a routine checkup, the dentist will examine your gums, cavities, plaque and tartar accumulation, neck, throat, tongue and face.

2. Setting a good example for your kids
Research suggests that parents can unknowingly pass on dental anxieties to their children and that if you show a negative attitude towards visiting the dentist, your kids will react in the same way.

3. Preventing bad breath
Bad odour can be caused by poor oral hygiene, gums disease or particles of food lodged in posterior areas, regular cleaning can prevent this problem.

4. Avoiding teeth loss
Advanced periodontitis can destroy the bone that supports the teeth as plaque eats further into roots of the teeth and thorough cleaning during your regular dental visits to keep your teeth healthy.

5. Maintaining overall well being
Besides cancer, poor oral hygiene can result in diabetes, heart disease and bone diseases as well.

6. Building a good relationship with your dentist
If you are nervous about dental treatment having regular check-ups can ease your anxieties as you get used to the routine and adapt yourself with the dental office environment.

7. Increasing self-esteem and confidence
Regular dental visits will not only help to keep your teeth and gums healthy but give you the confidence to show off your winning smile.

8. Help with sleep problems
If you are diagnosed with the disorder your dentist can provide a customized mouth guard to open the airway and eliminate snoring.

9 .Financial benefit
As old is saying, dentistry is not expensive but its negligence is. The preventive dentistry is expensive than restorative treatment.

Elite Athletes Possess Poor Oral Hygiene

According to the latest reports on elite athletes, some important and neglect things come into notice that they have poor oral health than most people despite regular brushing.
The survey and findings are published in the British dental journal where they underline the improvement as most of the athletes expressed an interest in changing their oral habits to improve their oral health.

The research team called UCL Eastman dental institute research provide dental check-up camp of 352 male and female athletes of cycling, rugby, football, rowing, hockey, sailing and athletics and measure tooth decay, gum health, acid erosion and found that nearly half had untreated tooth decay, large majority showed early signs of gum inflammation and almost a third reported that their oral had a negative impact on their training and performance. Researchers also asked them about what they did to keep their mouth, gums and teeth healthy.

Most interesting and noticeable things are the majority of them have good oral health-related habits and despite that 94% reported brushing their teeth at least twice a day and 44%reported regular flossing and this figures are higher than the general population.they all have a good oral health-related habits like brushing twice a day ,regular dental checkup, don’t smoke and healthy general diet.

After survey, researchers lastly found out the reason for this as many of them on regular use of sports drinks(87%), energy bars(59%), and energy gels(70%) which are known to damage teeth .all these beverages have sugar which increases the risk of tooth decay and the acidity increases risk of erosion.some of them face an elevated risk of oral diseases from a dry mouth during intensive training.

Heartening is that athletes were willing to consider behaviour changes such as additional fluoride use from mouthwash, more frequent dental visits, reducing their intake of sports drinks to improve oral health. The researcher will consider and observe them after this and publish their result.

PROTAPER

Protaper means progressive taper to improve flexibility and cutting efficiency. The change percentage of taper over the length of cutting blades adds to its unique feature. Variable tip diameters of protaper file allow it to have specific cutting action in defines arear of the canal without stressing instrument in other sections. The helical change angle over its cutting blades reduces the instrument from screeing into the canal and allows better removal of debris. It works on the principle of active motion which increases its efficiency and reduces torsional strain. Length of protaper reduced from 15 to 12.5mm for better access in the posterior region.

Niti protaper has 55% nickel and 45% titanium which has an advantage on shape memory, superelasticity, low modules of elasticity, corrosion-resistant, softer, good resiliency and biocompatibility. The protaper system consists of just three shaping and five finishing files.

Sx-orange coloured handle and use for the shaping of the orifice.
S1-purple coloured ring and used to prepare coronal part of the root.
S2-white coloured ring and used to prepare middle 1/3rd of the canal.
F1-yellow coloured ring and used to prepare apical third of the canal.
F2-red coloured ring and prepare apical third of the canal.
F3-blue coloured ring on the handle and used to prepare apical third of the canal.
F4-black coloured ring on the handle and used to prepare the apical 1/3rd of the canal.
F5-double yellow coloured ring and use to prepare apical 1/3rd of a canal.

There is retreatment protaper file also in protaper system which is a new edition in the treatment.

D1-11mm handle 16mm cutting surface,9% taper and for coronal filling removal.
D2-11mm handle,18mm cutting blades,8% taper and for middle filling removal.
D3-11mm Handle,22mm Cutting Blade,7%Taper and for apical filling removal.

Protaper gold is those with increased flexibility, greater resistance to cyclic fatigue and shorter handle of 11mm.Rotary protaper Niti files simplify root canal preparation, particularly in curved and restricted canals and their recommended speed is 15-350rpm.
