They are the tooth-coloured material based on its reaction between silicate glass powder and polyacrylic acid. They bond chemically to the tooth structure and release fluoride for a relatively long period. It is introduced in 1972 by Wilson and kent.there are different types of gic available like type 1(luting(,type 2(restoration),type 3(liner and base),type 4(fissureGabd sealant),type 5(orthodontic cement),type 6(core build up).They all exhibit great physical properties like low –solubility,low-shear and flexural strength, high compressive strength, coefficient of thermal expansion is similar to dentin. Setting time is different for a different type like 4-5 for type 1,7 minute for type 2. They are highly recommended in dentistry due to their tooth-coloured /esthetical approach which is available in various shades. pulpal responses or biocompatibility to dentin is favourable.Gic is extremely sensitive to air and water during setting so, immediately after placement into the cavity, it needs preshaped matrix applied to it.it is used in anterior esthetic restoration, for luting,core-build up, erode areas, atraumatic restoration, orthodontic bracket adhesion etc. There are some advantages also for all Gic that they exhibit higher opacity than resin,poor-wear resistance, poor tensile strength, low fracture resistance, less esthetic than composite.

A more recent innovation re water settable Gic,metal modified Gic, compomers , resin-modified Gic, which forms an even stronger bond with dentin than traditional Gic do.

The latest advancement in technology is LED curing light and they are widely used in the dentistry.LED curing light to have their different wavelengths and penetration time like some of LED curing light have 3sec.6sec,9sec etc and some have intensity meter also. They are more lightweight, portable and effective. the heat generated from LED curing light is much less which means it doesn’t require a fan to cool it. All high-speed handpieces incorporate an air or water spray as a coolent.Water or air spray are adjusted in a way that it forms a halo to cool the rotating bur at such a high speed. With the combination of high speed and water coolant, the working area is made clear and visible to the clinician. Handpieces mainly have two components, the body and the turbine.

 They come in various varieties like chuck/push, standard/mini/super torque,turbine air rotors and now ,for the more visibility fibre-optic are introduced in the market. With high-speed handpieces the bur continues to rotate even after the clinician removes his foot from pedal controlling air/water spray, its called coast speed.Most of the handpieces have two holes in the front, its called Borden two holes handpiece.Now, three holes are introduced which is used to vent out the excess air from the head of handpieces.

Many materials are used in the manufacture of handpieces like stainless steel which is stronger and heavier but now titanium is used which is much lighter, stronger and more resistant to repeated cycles of sterilization.

Handpieces should routinely require cleaning and disinfection.The lubricant should be used safely to use in the conjunction with steamsterilization at 135 degree Celsius.

Low-speed or Slow-speed handpieces are straight or contra-angle handpieces which are hand-held,air-driven or electric. They are mostly used in pre-clinical work. They spin the bur or prophy cup or disc at the rate of 50,000rpm. Used for removal of caries, prophylaxis cases, refining of a cavity and other endodontic procedures where cutting of the tooth is not in concern. They are not highly cutting efficient.

Low-speed used for prophylaxis generally operates at 5,000 rpm and endodontics and other procedures use attachments to reduce the speed to 1,500rpm or less and generate very high levels of torque for optimal control.

These low-speed handpieces are designed to handle much more air pressure than high-speed handpieces and can have a long life span due to operating speed and design difference.

Speed of the handpieces depends upon the pressure of the air supply, the configuration of the rotor components and gear inside the motor and When using these handpieces, there is less need for cooling the tooth with air and water spray.

They work when the air is introduced into the handpiece through chair unit foot pedal, the air is forced over the vanes of the rotor which causes it to spin.after the air moves around the rotor, it is forced out via the handpiece back end exhaust port.
